March 3, 2019 Meeting: Clever Crows with Loma Pendergraft

WOGBB members, you are in for a rare treat! Our next meeting will be held on Sunday March 3, 2019 from 1pm to 3pm at the UW Avian Conservation Laboratory's Corvid (Crow) Research Center in the new Life Sciences Building, University of Washington, Seattle. Our special guest will be Loma Pendergraft, a graduate student working in John Marzluff's lab studying crow communication and cognition. Prof. Marzluff and Loma are featured in Audubon magazine's "Meet the Bird Brainiacs: American Crow." He will discuss current research in avian behavior and crow intelligence. Come learn how clever birds can be - you won't want to miss it!

March 10, 2019 Meeting at Maynard Axelson's - this event is being rescheduled due to snow cancellation. 

Private waterfowl collection visit in Mt. Vernon, WA, followed by Skagit/Fir Island birding for snow geese and trumpeter swans. Learn how to manage a waterfowl collection of ducks and geese, along with pond systems and Wood Duck nest box design.

April 7, 2019 Bob Dawson's Macaw Rescue and Sanctuary Visit

Come learn about the great work this Bird Rescue and Sanctuary is doing. This visit will focus on learning about bamboo varieties used in pheasant pens and aviaries, the importance of bamboo in aviary bird health, and management and control techniques. Come dig bamboo for your pens! Please dress for muddy and wet conditions and bring what you need to wrap up and get your bamboo safely home.

April 11 -14, 2019 WOGGB Bird Educational Booth and Bird Display at the WA State Spring Fair

Members will be on hand to answer your bird health, bird care, and breeding questions. Our birds on view help promote public knowledge on the importance of bird conservation and habitat preservation. Highlighted is the roll private aviaries play in WA State. Displays will educate the public on ornamental and game bird species, and the opportunities to raise these beautiful birds in WA State. Club members will have a fantastic egg collection on display - always a crowd favorite. Come also to enjoy the WA Jr. Poultry Show.

May 19, 2019 Tour of Arnold and Debbie Schouten's Dry Creek Waterfowl Breeding Sanctuary, Port Angeles, WA.

Come learn about Dry Creek Sanctuary's mission to protect migratory waterfowl and sea ducks in particular.  Learn how their breeding facility is a national leader in the breeding of protected and endangered bird species from around the world.

September 6-12, 2019 WOGBB Bird Display at the WA State Fair's Animals of the World Exhibit

Our annual State Fair Bird Display. WOGBB members will be on hand to educate the public on ornamental and game bird species, and the opportunities to raise these beautiful birds in WA State. Club members will have a fantastic egg collection on display - always a crowd favorite.

Sept. 28, 2019 WOGBB Game Bird Display at WA State National Hunting and Fishing Day Festival

WOGBB members will be on hand to educate the youth groups participating in the event about the breeding and care of game birds, including pheasants, quail, chukars, and other game birds. Game birds and historical game bird hunting items will be on display. Come learn about the history of game bird farms in WA State.

FALL 2019 Tour of the new Burke Museum Building's Avian Collection - Date TBD

Come learn how the new building is allowing more space for its avian specimen collection and about the art of preserving bird specimens. Avian Collection Curator John Klicka will likely have on display birds from his private collection, including possibly a Dodo bird!


April 19 - 22, 2018   WA State Spring Fair in Puyallup - Bird Avian Health and Education Booth and Display -- Members will be present to answer avian health, breeding, and care questions.

May 20, 2018 WOGBB Meeting at Burke Museum with Curator John Klicka

John Klicka (Don and Betts Baepler Endowed Professorship and Curator of Birds) will be our host for a behind the scenes tour of where and how they preserve the birds that they receive for their collections and how the collection is utilized, and share a little about what is in store at the new Burke currently under construction. We will have time to peruse the collections.

June 10, 2018 WOGBB Meeting at Woodland Park Zoo

Come enjoy a behind the scenes tour of the Woodland Park Zoo's bird collections and operations. After a brief club meeting, we will embark on a tour of Woodland Park Zoo's bird exhibits led by our host Shawn Pedersen -- Woodland Park Zoo's Animal Care Manager. Shawn will guide us around the penguin, pheasant, waterfowl, and rain forest bird areas as we learn about the Zoo's important conservation efforts and breeding programs. Attendees are free to explore the rest of the zoo at their own pace. The big new exhibit opening in May 2018 is the Assam Rhino Reserve featuring greater one-horned rhinos and Demoiselle Cranes, so be sure to check that out.

Sept. 6th to Sept. 12, 2018 (Excluding Tues. Sept. 11th since the Fair is closed on Tuesdays)  WA State Fair in Puyallup - Bird Booth and Display -- Our birds will be on display at the Animals of the World Exhibit in Livestock Barn M. Members will be present to answer avian health, breeding, and care questions. Included with Fair admission.

Sept. 23, 2018 Meeting at Kathy Fries' Home and Aviary Tour

Kathy will be giving an introduction to the raising and breeding of pheasants, including Impeyans, Temminck's Tragopans, quail etc., and we will have a Q&A session. This is a great opportunity for new WOGBB members to ask all your bird care and breeding questions.

December 9, 2018 WOGBB Holiday Gathering 2018 - Parrots & Potluck

 Please join WOGBB and host Bob Dawson, CEO of the incredible Macaw Rescue & Sanctuary, for a guided tour to learn about the important work he is doing, followed by a potluck and meeting, and optional holiday gift exchange.

Hosmer Street, Tacoma, WA 98408  Time: 2PM.  Meet in the lobby and we will tour the store, waterfall and aquarium.  Meeting to be held at Uncle Buck's Fishbowl and Grill restaurant and bowling alley.  Bowling optional.  Kids welcome to attend!

September 5th - 9th, 2014 Event: Washington State Fair in Puyallup -- WOGBB Club Booth and Bird Display. Visit our birds at the Animals of the World exhibit during the first five days of the fair, including opening weekend.

September 21, 2014 UW Burke Museum Bird Specimen & Ornithology Collection Visit with John Klicka. Time: Meet at the loading dock on the West Side of the building at 2:00pm. The museum is open 10-5pm. If you are late (there is a Seahawks game in town that day so traffic may be slow thru Seattle), give me a call at 425-246-2551 and I will find you and let you in. Parking is free on Sundays. There is a cafe available for lunch and beverages.

October 19, 2014 Meeting at The Schouten's home and aviary tour, Port Angeles, WA. Time: 2pm. Address: 367 Walkabout Way, Port Angeles, WA. Optional Excursion: Meet at 11am at the The Olympic Game Farm, 1423 Ward Road, Sequim, WA. You can buy loaves of bread at the Farm to feed the wildlife. The Schouten's run a licensed facility near Port Angeles and raise beautiful waterfowl, many of which are used for research programs or are sent to zoos. The facility maintains and raises 13 species of ducks commonly known as sea ducks, which are rarely seen in captivity. These sea ducks spend most of their lives in salt water, coming to fresh water and land only during the breeding season. The sea duck group includes some of the most spectacular and highly specialized of all waterfowl -- Harlequins, Long-tailed Ducks, and Spectacled, King and Common Eiders.
